MAMA DAN'S Southern Country Cooking
Best Cookbook In The South
|
|
My name is Diane Flippen, you can call me Mama Dan, and I have been Keeping The Family Together
cooking for sixty years. My recipes have pleased the palette of
millions. I owned a restaurant, for over twenty years, where each meal
was personally overseen by me. When I semiretired in 2006 we closed
the restaurant, and my children opened up a commercial bakery using
the same recipes that made our restaurant so popular. During my 65
years of cooking, many magazines, news papers and T. V. net works,
which includes a segment on the cooking channel, have reported about
my passion for the kitchen.
typical American family with typical family situations, which were
discussed and usually resolved around the family dinner table. Now the
kids are grown up and have tables of their own, but the tradition
still stands strong. Even today in my family everything, good or bad,
is discussed around a table full of delicious southern country
cooking. The reason I think the dinner table works is because me, my
husband, our three children and their spouses, and some of their
children , all work together, all live within one-half mile of each
other, and even after forty years they all still come running when I
set the table. By the way, our kitchen table that once sat five now
seats twenty-four spanning four generations.

Now lets get down to the facts; I just love southern country cooking.
I have lived in the south all my life, and down here it's the only
kind of cooking there is. Southern cooking is flavored with family
pride and memories of childhood., and has its own style and flair. The
kind of food that keep families eating together meal after meal. It
doesn't take a culinary degree or a trip to the gourmet store to
create a southern meal. Honestly, you don't even need a whole lot of
time. Just a delicious, simple, easy to follow recipe which you can
find in my cookbook.
Can Save Money Eating At Home
By southern cooking, I mean fried country ham, purple hull peas, green
beans, cooked slow with bits of ham, fried chicken with mashed
potatoes and cream gravy, and hot biscuits with butter melting inside.
All of us southerners love hot bread; we have angel biscuits, yeast
rolls, Sally Lunn, cornbread and flitters. You just have to try the
flitters. Have you had round steak and gravy or chicken and
dumplings. What about corn casserole, this was a favorite in the
restaurant, Jade salad, or chocolate steam cake. When I think of pies,
I think of pecan, sweet potato, chess, burnt caramel, coconut cream,
and chocolate cream pie. Oh, we can't forget about the southern fried
pie, which my family is best known for. By the way, all of these easy,
low cost dishes are found in my cookbook.

My husband and I began our journey together farming cotton but later
decided that we'd have a brighter future if we switched to farming
fruit instead. Every year we would buy a little more land, plant a few
more trees, in the hopes of building something worthwhile to pass on
to our children. In 1984, the peach crop was damaged by a hail storm,
and the fruit couldn't be sold on the fresh fruit market. I decided to
process the peaches and use them to make fried peach pies. I worked
hours, batch after batch, trying to perfect it. I tested the pies on
my neighbors, family, and friends until we settled on the perfect
recipe. The peach fried pie was such a hit and the neighbors loved my
cooking so much, my husband built me a restaurant . Folks would come
from all around to eat our southern country cooking and pester me for
my recipes. So I decided to create a cookbook full of easy to follow
southern meals that will leave your stomach full and your pocketbook
smiling. By the way, we now sell over a million pies a year.
Easy To Follow Recipes
My cookbook is full of simple, easy to follow, recipes that you can
only find in the south. The best aspect of my cookbook is that it's
great for all the ages. Whether you're a new couple just starting out,
wanting to build some good family values, or a veteran chef who
thinks they know it all, anyone can learn, not only how to cook, but
how to bring their family to the dinner table with a recipe out of my
cookbook. I've dedicated sweat, blood, and years to make each recipe
unique, satisfying, and so simple my eight year old
great-granddaughter has already begun her cooking career. She has
already perfected my Peach Soup that you can find on page twenty of my
cookbook.
The Only One
Since I have been cooking for sixty-five years, it is rather easy to
guess my age, or close to it. Needless to say there will not be a
second edition cookbook. This is the one and only one that will be on
the market! Believe it or not, I have over a thousand cookbooks in my
personal collection and I look Thur at least ten or more a day, while
watching the cooking channel, and yet I still go back to mine when I
get serious about southern country cooking . It's a true and tried way
of bringing my family back to the table.
The Family That Cooks And Eats Together

I received "Mama Dan's Southern Country Cooking" cookbook as a present a few years ago. Over the years I have tried a variety of recipes and many of them have become a favorite at my home. Most of the recipes have ingredients you probably have in your cupboard and are fairly easy to make. I love the helpful cooking hint section and have turned to this many times. My children have always loved boiled custard during the holidays. On page 107 you'll find the best custard recipe that I've ever made. I love serving the Almond Lendend Cake during parties, and the guest never fail to ask for the recipe. For those who love salads, the broccoli salad and the chicken-fruit salad is a must. Anyone who loves Southern cooking should give this book a try, you will not be disappointed Donna Cashion Dover, TN.

My name is Clint Killion, for the last 5 years I have been a chef at the Wildhorse Saloon in Nashville TN. I graduated from Johnson & Wales University with a Bachelors Degree in culinary arts. My profession has carried me from Montana to Key West FL. I even worked the Olympics in Atlanta. I have to contribute my interest in cooking to my grandmother "Mama Dan." Some of my best childhood memories are standing by Mama Dan in a chair helping her cook. So when she asked me for a recipe for her cookbook, I had to give her my best. It is Chef Clint Killion's Cheese Cake page 91. This recipe is my own creation and I always use it for very special occasions or if I really need to impress my guests. I highly recommend this cookbook. I know you will really enjoy it. This is the one that I use all the time.
